5 Tips How to Choose Best Multilingual WordPress Themes

If you need multi language WordPress Themes either for yourself or your client there are multiple options to choose from. They might seem similar at first but they’re quite different when you look closer. How do you orientate in them and how to choose the best theme for your business?

1. Simplicity of use WordPress translation plugin

Manual translation content management tools and elements? Never again!

Every single Multilingual WordPress Theme requires some sort of plugin which allows website to become multilingual. At the beginnings of translation tool integration within WordPress, WPML plugin has dominated. Because it’s been an universal WordPress translation plugin, it has spread quickly among developers.

However, it’s not very user friendly. You need to translate not only the Theme elements but also every tool in the system individually to every chosen language. Only WP admin environment is translated to your installed default language.

Yes, you can translate menu, widgets or you can have multi-user translation management. Nevertheless each expression – and its translated version – has to be inserted manually. If you want to have and administer website in 10 languages, you need to translate all elements, widgets etc. 10 times. Or you need to go through the hasel of importing .po files. Luckily, not all of the translation tools require this tedious procedures.

We used to have WPML plugin in our Multilingual WordPress Themes but we realized that it doesn’t provide us with the flexibility we need. Therefore we developed our very own multilingual support & translation plugin AIT Languages.

AIT Languages plugin extends AIT multilingual Themes so they include entire frontend and backend translations to 26 languages. It means that by simple language switching you will have translated admin, Page Builder, all elements, widgets… simply entire admin environment, including tools for website creation and administration. Just prepare your own translated content. And fill it out into the individual sections.

Bye-bye boring rewriting of all expressions!

Translating of individual tools using WPML plugin (or any other plugin based on the same principle) in backend/frontend takes a lot of time. Work with AIT Languages plugin is much faster and more convenient. All content management tools – elements and widgets are pre-arranged and translated to 26 languages. All you have to do is choose the language and start creating website with AIT Multilingual Theme in environment translated to your prefered language.

Time you used to spend by inserting system terms one by one, in every single language, now you can spend much more effectively. You can start working on all multilingual versions of your website right after installation of the theme.

3. Number of languages

When choosing multi language WordPress Themes you need to take into account number of languages you can use simultaneously while using the theme. AIT Languages allows AIT Multilingual Themes to use 26 languages. And we’re continuously preparing and adding new ones. UPDATE: Other multilingual plugins for WP Themes

Other multi language plugins for WordPress Themes available online

Apart from AIT Languages plugin that is fully compatible with all AIT multilingual and translated Themes and the already mentioned WPML plugin there are other multilingual plugins you can meet with when creating multi language websites. Let’s have a look at the functionality of those used most.

Multilingual third party WP plugins are often divided into categories based on the type of translation. These can be Automatic machine translations, WP plugins with separate translations or the translations can be facilitated via multisite (without or without other plugins).

Category WP Automatic machine translations

This category includes number of multilingual plugins which use Google Language Translator widget for the translations. One of such plugins is e.g. GTranslate.

Gtranslate offers many languages and is free, what are its advantages. A disadvantage is however that the automatic translation often does not make sense – this can drive away the visitor from any further activity on the (translated) website. In addition, as a result of such translation, the website content can be evaluated by Google as spam.

The same principle is used by plugin Google Language Translator. This plugin enables practical addition of Google Language tool to the pages, posts and widgets via shortcodes. But similarly to GTranslate, there is a risk that the website will contain text with incorrect meaning. Another plugins utilizing same automatic translation principle are:

Google Website Translator by Prisna.net:

  • customizable style
  • simple use

LingoTek Translation:

  • free for automatic translations
  • uses Microsoft Translation tool
  • offers another two versions – community translation (content translated by your own team or you) and paid professional translation (translators are provided by the platform)

Category WP plugins with separate translations

It is quite popular between developers to use plugins that enable separate translation of the website and posts and their subsequent linking. One of the plugins in this category is the above mentioned WPML plugin.

Plugin Polylang is also quite popular. It uses separate domains or subdomains for each language separately. Polylang’s advantage is a possibility of switching between languages via menu or widget and an automatic language detection. Disadvantage of this plugin is that many WordPress Themes support this plugin only partially and as a result of this it might not work properly. Another disadvantage is also the fact that each language needs to be added individually.

When creating multi language website you can consider to try also free plugin QtranslateX. Similarly to Polylang, QtranslateX provides an option to switch between languages. In contrast, what many users consider as a disadvantage, is the poor support and limited compatibility with some of the themes.

Category WordPress Multisite

Another method for building a multilingual website is a creation of multiple websites from one WordPress installation. Each one of the multisites has its own language and works completely independently – on subdomains (e.g. domainname.com/de) and also on separate domains (e.g. domainname.de, domainname.co.uk etc.)

WordPress Multisite can work without any other plugins, but by adding the plugins you can achieve more comfortable administration of your translations and several useful extensions.

One of the most used plugins for multisite is plugin MultilingualPress with its main advantage of being able to administer translations of individual websites and posts without a need to switch between these websites. Another useful functionality is also generation of optimized URL addresses.

In case you decide to no longer use the plugin and you deactivate it, you don’t need to worry – all the pages will continue to work without problems.

Another plugin that can be used for free is Multisite Language Switcher, or alternatively a Zanto.

Before you make a decision which plugin to use, you need to consider all the various advantages and disadvantages of each of the plugins. This will help you to choose the right plugin that will suit best your needs of your multi language website.

Why are AIT Themes one of the best Multilingual Themes?
